Vote and Win...Part 2

A little while ago I had 2 covers up that people were to vote for.  Things have changed a little.  The Grade 12 graphic arts class at Carlton High School in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan has used Red Serge as a class project.  Below are the first 2 choices plus all of the high school classes submissions.

First, here's the back of the book script so you have an idea of what it's about...

The body of a young girl found at a national park beach leads the major crimes unit of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police to a mass grave.  How long had the Devil been coming to Prince Edward Island?

Though fighting with personal turmoil Reid is drawn to the case.  He has to make this one right, but is the cost too much?

The RCMP wear their red serge on duty - in ceremony, to honour others, and in death.

Taken during a Musical Ride
Red Serge is what the red uniform worn by the Canadian Mounties.  This uniform plays an important part in the novel and I wanted to honour those that are my hero's.  Unfortunately I can't use an actual picture of the uniform without the official word so we had to figure something else out.

Let the choices begin...

#1 the red sand beach cover ............ #2 the red uniform digging cover

   #3 The Spooky Woods .............. #4 Bloody Crime Scene ................. #5 Moonlight ................... #6 Beachy
    #7 Cartoon girl .............................. #8 Blind ...............................#9 Shadow Man ........................#10 Rocky

#11 Spy vs Spy ..........................#12 The Hand .........................#13 Ghostly .............................#14 Skull

Contest...it's pretty simple.  Down there in the comment section tell me which one you prefer or leave a comment.  Everyone who votes or comments will be entered into a draw to win a signed copy of my first novel RED ISLAND.  Which ever cover gets the most votes will be RED SERGE's cover and all those that voted for it will go into a second contest for signed copies of both RED ISLAND and RED SERGE.  (this does not mean you should vote for both just to get both books)  Please vote for whatever you like the most. ((Anyone who voted before is still in the running, but please feel free to vote again and have your name in twice))

This contest lasts until the end of November.  Ready, set, vote!

  1. #2 because I am a SUCKER for red and chartreuse together - one of the reasons I picked up Intensity by Dean Koontz was the boldness of the cover - and I was soooo glad I did! Go BOLD!! (I like the fonts on #1 better though)

  2. #1 because the red filter somehow makes the clay look like denim.

  3. #1 As this is boook two in the series it follows that the covers should have some continuity.

  4. #2 - the first cover is too close to the previous book and the second cover is far more ominous and fits the story better!

  5. 1 as it appeals to me more and is close to the first.

  6. I personally like number 1. ;)

  7. When you are looking at them your eyes goes to the second one more, so I would pick 2 though the sand could be a lighter red than the serge, but I don't know how red the sand is in PEI.

  8. I like the boldness of #2, but I prefer the font style of #1. The font on the title of #2 is a little too pushed together and cartoonish.

  9. #2 -- The red colour and hand in the sand, depicts in my opinion, what the story is about.

  10. #4 bloody crime scene
Just appeals to me more than the others.

  11. They are all really good, it was between 6 and 13 so I pick 13 because the book is about death of young girls, and the turmoil of Reid trying to deal with the death of kids in an old case he worked on.

  12. What an excellent project for the Grade 12's! Well done! I'm amazed by all the graphical interpretations of the story. I lean toward #2 - the red is eye-catching although I don't see a young girl's hand; it seems to me to be an adult male - and #8 - the unsettling image of the young girl pulls you in, wanting to read the book description and understand what the story may be about, but I'd lose the floating maple leaves; less is more and the one sitting on a tree has me seeing a palm tree. That cover with a red wash (like #2) might be stunning. I don't think either of the title/author fonts suit the cover/genre/your brand, and with a goal of establishing some consistency/branding for the series, perhaps using the same fonts/layout as you used for Red Island would provide that cohesion/branding?

  13. #2, however - extend the picture under the font and change the title font to red and I really like #14.

  14. I really like # 1..very indicative of the shoreline where the crime took place ...

  15. #6 - Beachy - It looks calm but you know there is more intrigue. Blood & guts on the cover tends to turn me away.
