1 Dream Down...time to create more

This past weekend I had the opportunity to sell some books in a huge mall in Saskatoon.  I will admit that it was a little slow, but most of the people I talked to were really interested and looking forward to reading my books.

My wife has taken on the job of being a sort of manager for my writing career.  She has taken the time to make business cards, bookmarks and even t-shirts to help get the word out about Lorne Oliver and his novels.  (yes I went 3rd person there, so what?)  I want to thank her for all of her work.

I did get to witness a dream as well.  A gentleman bought my novel, Red Serge, to read while his wife was shopping.  He sat down on a bench and got right to it.  No, he's not headless.

I'm not too sure where I will be going next.  I am in talks with several bookstores across the country.  Until then I will keep writing.
Thanks to everyone for the support.

"You know, those are lovely earrings," Beverly said as she rested her hands over the first book.  It had the title Family Memories.
Chrys smiled with a polite thank you.  She had forgotten about putting the earrings on.  They were wire dream catchers with beads of smokey blue amongst the web and a single silver feather hanging down the middle.  She absently tucked her hair behind her ear to show the matching magnetic bracelet.  She thought the earrings brought her luck.  As she watched the woman open the photo album she started to wonder.  Chrys ignored her brother tapping her leg.  They were torturing these two by asking questions about a lost child, so the least they could do was indulge the woman.  It was only ten minutes before both women were crying......
.......Chrys looked at herself in the rear-view mirror.  Her skin was red around the eyes.  She brushed her hair back behind her ear.  She still wore the dreamcatcher earrings.  Damn it.  She forgot to take them off when she was changing.  She'd have to make sure to put them in her jacket pocket before hitting the floor at the studio in case any of her students were there.  It was barely supper time, so kids were certain to be there.
She turned the key in the ignition.  Loud music blared through the speakers.
"What the …" The radio wasn't that loud when they got back from the veterinarians.  Chrys leaned over and turned down the volume.  As she sat up, her eyes flicked to the rear-view mirror.  There was a shadow there, a shadow behind her.
Oh my God!

Hands reached out of the dark.
Chrys turned to the door.  She had to get out.  She had to scream.  Spencer.
A hand clasped down on her mouth.  Another grabbed the side of her head.
Fuck.
There was a smell.  What was that?
There were stars and flashes of red in her eyes.
She had to run.
Chrys lurched forward.  Something hooked her earlobe.  There was a ripping pain.  What was it?  A sound that she couldn't understand escaped her throat.  She felt heat on the side of her neck.  Her head hit the door frame.  The world spun.  Chrys felt like she was falling.  Was she falling?  Pain.  Something cold touched her face, her body.
The world turned rapidly.  Things faded around the outside.  Dark replaced light.

The Cistern...Prologue

Here is the prologue for my upcoming mystery thriller, The Cistern.  I will warn you that it might be a little disturbing to some readers...and animal lovers.

Twenty years ago

He wondered what the cat wanted more - to be let out of the box or to have the cinder block lifted from its tail.

Meeerrrooowwww

He stared at it, with what his mother called his big baby eyes.  The cat screeched and thrashed about wildly without getting anywhere.  Its feet dug into the bottom of the box wanting to pull its tail out from under the concrete block.

The boy's tongue flicked out and licked the saliva collecting on his lips.  His head tilted to the side as he pondered how long would it take before Whisker's tail popped off.

He smiled.  It was like that rhyme before you flicked the dandelion head off with your thumb.  "Momma had a baby and its head popped off."

Meeoooowwrrreeeooowww

Things were tingling inside the boy.  He didn't know why or how it all started, but he didn't want to let it stop.  He wanted to see how far it would go.  If the boy saw Whiskers pull its tail off would he moan in ecstasy like those men in the movies his father watched after everyone went to bed?  Would he be shocked?

This was different than the cat he put in the barrel of rain water.  He stood and watched Tabby try and swim to the edge.  Then he'd push the cat back to the center with a stick.  It splashed around a long time, but then just gave up and it was over.

Whiskers was different.  His face got warm.

Meeeoooowwwwrrrrrr

He knew that if the grey cat could pull its tail out...

"Momma had a baby..."

...it wouldn't be over.  Any bone, or whatever was in a cat’s tail, was crushed.  He could still hear the sounds as he tipped the heavy cinderblock over.

Meeoooowwwrrrrrooowwwrrr

"Hush kitty," he said in a calming tone.  "Everything’s okay."  He reached out a hand.

The cat riled up.  Its paw swiped.

The boy pulled his hand back.  There was pain on his fingers.  He looked down as crimson bubbled to the surface and squeezed through the thin holes left by razor-sharp feline blades.  He put his fingertips in his mouth and sucked.

Stupid cat.

He looked around the yard.  There were more cinderblocks.  He could take one, hold it above the box, count to three...

"What are you doing?"

Mmmmrrrrreeeeooooowwwwww

He spun around.  The girl from down the road had turned the corner of his house.  It was the two of them and the howling cat.

The boy’s eyes narrowed.  He could taste blood on his tongue.  Cats and dogs were one thing.  He took a step toward the girl.  This was going to be something altogether different.  Part of him grew.

"...and its head popped off."
